Ways to Get into Wedding Photography
April 4th, 2010To get into the wedding photography business, one needs to get himself a camera first, or use the one he’s already had. When planning to buy one, don’t get something cheap, but instead, choose a good one. After that, study photography and practice shooting, especially black and white pictures and moving objects. Also, learn from other professional photographers by doing apprenticeship or volunteer works. While doing that, start making your portfolio and promote it as soon as you have made a good one.
To get into a Cebu wedding photography business is not instantaneous. Like most people, our knowledge about photography is basically just aim and click. But weddings are serious events that, unless if you don’t plan to earn anything from it, you should know everything about wedding photography if you are the official photographer.
Learning/Getting the Equipment
If you already have a camera, get it out and learn how to use it by shooting anything and everything. But, If you are still planning to buy one, remember to choose the good stuff. Invest on lenses that are of high quality, instead of putting too much weight on the camera body, which is what most photographers do. The reason for this, is because camera bodies tend to become obsolete in about three years. Meanwhile, it is unknown how long the value of a good lens can last. Choose those that are made by major manufacturers, and, don’t pick zoom lenses with apertures that are constantly varying. Choose a lens, instead, with an aperture that you can lock down to at least f/2.8 wide. And lastly, don’t buy a complete kit, instead, build your gear one piece at a time.
Study and Practice
It is always best to go into a photography school, if you are really serious about becoming a professional wedding photographer, but other than doing that, you can also study on your own. Read books on photography. Study everything about photography and not just those about weddings. This includes lighting, exposure and composition. And, in combination with studying, of course, is practicing. Begin by shooting only in black and white for about a year, so you will learn about light and contrast, which you would never get from color. Also, study Ansel Adams and his works. In addition to that, study photographs too. Try to figure out how those pictures were taken; what kind of lens was being used and where it was placed; if there were additional lightings used, where they were placed and how they were used. Furthermore, you should also practice shooting fast moving objects, so you will learn how to develop timing. Since weddings are events that happen only once in a couple’s lifetime, timing is very crucial to get the perfect shot of a magical moment. Go to an area in your vicinity where sports, such as basketball, baseball, etc., are held. When you can finally get consistent shots of sports events that are well composed, exposed, and timed; then you can now shoot for any wedding event and capture great moments; whatever kind of equipment you use.
Do Apprenticeship
Along with studying, it’s also a very good idea to do an apprenticeship or volunteer work for a professional photographer. This way, you will learn, by observing, how they do their work. Some would advice that you should not let them know of your plans on becoming a professional photographer someday. The reason is, doing this might get you rejected, since you will eventually become a competition. But I think, you should let them know outright of your intentions, since it is already very obvious anyway, instead of being seen as dishonest.
Making Your Portfolio
As soon as possible, start making your portfolio. Volunteer to take pictures for friends’ and families’ weddings, as much as you can. And then, in your portfolio, organize a system, such as a star rating or favorites. Your work should keep on improving, just as any photographer’s work should be. And, as your pictures get better, so should all your galleries.
Promoting Your Services
When you’ve finally made a good portfolio, make it accessible, such as online, and promote your services.
Now that you know about how to get into wedding photography, it is now up to you to use that information to develop your skills, gain more knowledge and deal with clients.
