Legal Counsel Jobs – Are They Attractive Anymore?
January 31st, 2011Maybe you’ve seen the newest legal series on ABC, The Deep End? The freshman corporate lawyers on the show lead glamorous lives; they spend their days in snappy suits, work at a civilized pace, acquire appreciation and wish from their superiors, and also have the time and effort for flirting, small chat and the small joys of a white-collar position. Life in the fictional superrich law office of Sterling Huddle Oppenheim & Craft in the show, appears as taken away from everyday activities as it actually is, played out like it is in a glass skyscraper high above Los Angeles. The only allocation designed to actuality in the show comes from tough-man grumblings of how they have got to manage with all the workload. The show was created two years ago, in the days prior to the meltdown, and in today’s environment of factory lawyer jobs, it seems pathetically obsolete.
There are no more starting wages closing in on $200,000 annually; there won’t be any corporate fringe benefits, simply no fast tracks to partnership, and no champagne and massages at night. The legal profession is in one of its worst low points in years. Lawyer tasks are being cut everywhere – there have been nearly 5000 cutbacks last year. Very good legal work nowadays can be being employed at all, in a new career, possibly, defending the indigent for a living income. Lawyers today earn money from the outcomes they bring in, not for potential. The pressure to execute is relentless, and can drive fresh law graduates to happily incorporate a different occupation, tending bar.
Students that started law school not too long ago when it was all roses and champagne, entered, after graduation, a world of transformed guidelines in legal employment. They woke up from their hopes for popularity and fortune into this heedless, dog-eat-dog world. Corporate lawyers have typically found their billable hours originating from real estate, financial services, and the tech industry. All these sectors have suffered awfully in the great economic downturn of 2008. There aren’t any more billable hours; work get compensated by the case. And an associate at a law firm who performs very competently at the lawyer work he’s handed, still has no assurance of occupation. Somebody who makes business, gains all the perks in lawsuit, or rallies the team around, and does all this at a major law firm and has a significant degree, still is often disposable. Attorneys now have surely been lining up for therapy for tension and melancholy.
Law graduates are even willing to make a major pay reduction in return for sensible, constant work; but attorney jobs like that are luxurious too in the present atmosphere. It may be tough to believe it, but lawyer jobs that ask of you nothing higher than a steady civilized pace today, pay only a job flipping burgers at McDonald’s, if you will consider the hourly rate. They must be competing with what lawyers charge over in China, the Philippines and Bangalore. India has made a difference. Lawyer jobs are being farmed out, outsourced. Lawyers once had combat in them to protest something that compromised on their legal rights. With compromise populating them from every path, protest and challenge will no longer be a lawyer’s choice.
